How do people find my site?
There are a number of ways to increase traffic to your site.
- Firstly, you can improve the ranking of your site in search engines. In practice, getting to number 1 on Google is very, very difficult, and is not a realistic goal. Appearing on the first 3 pages is a better aim, but could take up to a year. Our web consultant will help you with strategies for improving your ranking, but the main techniques are to get a good blend of keyword matches with your page contents, and to get a good set of links to your site from other, well-ranked sites that relate to yours.
- You can buy advertisements to your site, using schemes that require you to pay only when the links to your site are clicked. These ads appear in searches that relate to your site. You can also put your site in directories, under categories that match your purpose.
- You can carry out email marketing using a list of subscribers to your site. By making offers of good deals or free information, or downloads that require nothing but the visitor’s email address, you can collect lists of interested people, and ask them if they will accept emails from you.
There are other, less “webby” ways to increase awareness of your site.
- Advertise your web address in ordinary media.
- Put your web address on your business card.
- Tell your customers to go to your site when you do business with them.
- Make your web address known to your community.
- Put your site into trade directories, yellow pages.
If your site is genuinely useful, people will find it and use it. Make your web site part of your business, have real things happening on it, don’t just leave it as a bit of fluff on the web.
